An example of the intricate applique work created by the Cuna women of San Blas province on the Caribbean coast of Panama. The Cuna are believed to be the descendants of the Carib Indians who were prompted by a missionary woman to stitch the colorful designs, originally painted on their naked bodies, into clothing.
