An example of the intricate applique work created by the Cuna
women of San Blas province on the Caribbean coast of Panama. The Cuna
are believed to be the descendants of the Carib Indians who were
prompted by a missionary woman to stitch the colorful designs, originally
painted on their naked bodies, into clothing.
